The Atlanta Police Foundation and the Atlanta Police Department launched Crime Stoppers Atlanta on January 29, 2007.
Crime Stoppers, an anonymous tip line, is an internationally utilized program that works on the basis of a strong partnership between the community, the media, and law enforcement. Over the years Crime Stoppers has maintained an impressive national conviction rate of over 95%. Crime Stoppers works because private reward dollars allow the tipster to remain anonymous. In any investigation police and other law enforcement agencies encounter individuals who will not directly provide information. The three key reasons are: fear of reprisal, an attitude of apathy, and a reluctance to get involved. Crime Stoppers breaks through these barriers by giving people the opportunity to provide information without directly speaking to police or having to testify in court. Obviously investigators need witnesses to help prove their case in court, but most importantly they need information that allows them to zero in on a suspect or a criminal operation such as a drug trafficking network.
Crime Stoppers Atlanta is a program of the Atlanta Police Foundation and is governed by the Foundation’s board of trustees. In addition, a metro law enforcement task force has been convened to help oversee the program and to provide information regarding crimes that will be highlighted through the program, and a citizen advisory council chaired by SunTrust SVP John Geraghty determines how the funds will be disbursed. APD Sergeant Rosa Quintana serves as the Director of Crime Stoppers Atlanta.
During the first eleven months of 2007, Crime Stoppers Atlanta took 400 tips. These tips led to 26 arrests and solved 55 outstanding cases for Part I Crimes. These statistics speak to the success of Crime Stoppers Atlanta program and the critical importance it plays in helping APD to get violent criminals off the streets.
