(Mar. 20, 2025) — The Atlanta Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit is often recognized for its role in maintaining public safety by providing a highly visible presence and managing large crowds during events. However, beyond its crowd control responsibilities, the unit is deeply involved in community engagement, building positive relationships with Atlanta residents of all ages.
Recently, the Mounted Patrol Unit participated in Kindezi Old Fourth Ward’s “College and Career Week,” an event designed to expose elementary and middle school students—affectionately called “geniuses” by their school—to a variety of career paths. Officers and their equine partners visited the school, offering students an up-close look at their role in law enforcement while sharing insights into careers in public safety.
“The presence of the Mounted Patrol Unit at community events like these fosters meaningful connections between officers and the public,” said Curtislene Bass, Director of Officer Support Programs at the Atlanta Police Foundation. “For many students, meeting the horses and learning about their training offers an interesting and unforgettable experience that helps them see law enforcement in a more personal way.”
“I’ve never seen a real horse before,” said one of the geniuses in amazement.
The impact of the event was felt on both sides. When asked about their experience, APD Mounted Patrol officers shared their enthusiasm: “The event went great, and we would love to return.”
Candace Myrick, a representative of the school, expressed her gratitude for the unit’s support and collaboration.
“Your presentation was truly inspiring and had a significant impact on everyone in attendance. The insights and experiences you provided opened our geniuses’ eyes to new possibilities for their future. Your words encouraged them to think differently about their paths, empowering them to consider careers and educational opportunities they might not have imagined before. Your support and involvement made a lasting impression on the next generation.”
As APD continues to prioritize both safety and community engagement, the Mounted Patrol Unit remains a vital link between law enforcement and the people they serve.
“The unit uses events like “College and Career Week” to highlight career options in law enforcement and strengthen its effort to build positive relationships with the youth of Atlanta and beyond,” said Bass.
