ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) announces its Childcare Incentive Program (CHIP), which provides eligible Atlanta Police Department officers with up to $400 per month in childcare assistance for newborns to age five. Since launching the pilot in 2024, the program has supported more than 50 APD families, helping to offset the steep and rising costs of early childhood care, one of the most pressing financial challenges for working parents.
“As the commander of APD’s Community Service Division, I’ve seen firsthand how CHIP has made a meaningful difference in the lives of our officers and their families,” said Maj. Jeffrey Cantin. “It’s more than just financial assistance; it’s peace of mind for those who serve.”
CHIP is part of APF’s broader strategy to invest in the real-life needs of Atlanta’s officers, both on and off the job. Through initiatives like the Secure Neighborhoods housing program, educational scholarships, and Build the Force hiring and lateral transfer bonuses, APF’s Officer Support Programs are designed to attract top talent, strengthen morale, and support long-term retention within the Atlanta Police Department.
“Supporting our officers and their families is essential to building a strong, resilient police force,” said Chief Darin Schierbaum. “The Childcare Incentive Program reflects the commitment to providing resources that help officers balance the demands of their service with the needs of their families. When our officers know their loved ones are cared for, they can focus fully on protecting and serving our community.”
This program enables officers to access safe, high-quality care while preserving the family time that is essential to their mental health and well-being. To qualify, officers must be in good standing, be the biological or legal guardian of the child, and use a licensed, quality-rated provider through the Quality Care for Children network. One child per household is eligible for assistance.
