(Mar. 18, 2025) – The Atlanta Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit has officially moved into the Public Safety Training Center, marking a significant step in enhancing officer training and equine care. This move, made possible through the support of the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) and dedicated donors, provides the Mounted Patrol with state-of-the-art facilities to better serve and protect the city.
“For years, the Mounted Patrol Unit has played a vital role in crowd control, community engagement, and high-visibility policing at some of Atlanta’s biggest events—including concerts, festivals, and games for the Falcons, Hawks, and Atlanta United,” said Curtislene Bass, Director of Officer Support Programs at the Atlanta Police Foundation. “Their towering presence allows officers to navigate crowded areas efficiently, offering both security and approachability to residents and visitors.”
The Mounted Patrol Unit now has access to modern stables, specialized training areas, and upgraded equipment that enhance their operational effectiveness. APF continues to support Mounted Patrol by providing horse care, and other essential resources to ensure that both officers and their equine partners remain in peak condition.
“The new Public Safety Training Center is a game-changer for our Mounted Patrol Unit,” said Lieutenant Greg Lyon, commander of the MPU. “It allows us to train in a controlled environment while ensuring our horses receive the best possible care. This investment strengthens our ability to provide a strong police presence at Atlanta’s largest events.”
As Atlanta prepares to take the world stage for FIFA World Cup 2026, programs like Mounted Patrol help ensure safety through crowd control and high visibility policing. The Atlanta Police Foundation continues to champion innovative solutions to recruit, retain, and equip officers with the resources they need to uphold public safety.
