(Feb. 10, 2025) — Each year, the PACE Academy Men’s Basketball Team takes the game beyond the court through its annual “Playing for a Change” tournament—a competition dedicated to making a lasting impact.
Since its inception five years ago, the tournament has been about more than basketball; it has been a platform for supporting causes that drive real change. This year, the team chose to support the Atlanta Police Foundation’s @Promise Initiative, raising $5,000 to help provide essential resources and opportunities for young people in Atlanta’s high-crime communities.
“When we do Playing for a Change, we always find a cause to champion, and this [@Promise] was the cause this year,” said PACE Academy Men’s Basketball Head Coach Sharman White. “When I heard about it and understood what they were about, I instantly said, ‘This is who we are going to stand behind at this year’s event.’”
@Promise Centers are transformative community hubs that offer youth facing socioeconomic challenges access to mentorship, educational support, and workforce development programs that help them stay on track and reach their full potential. During their visit to one of our three @Promise Centers, the PACE Academy players saw firsthand the impact of their support.
They heard from Teiarra Sims, a young mother who graduated from @Promise@Work, a workforce development program that equips participants with the skills needed for stable employment.
“@Promise is one of the real reasons why I graduated high school,” Teiarra shared.
With @Promise’s support, she not only completed high school but also took the steps to build a strong foundation for herself and her child’s future.
“Playing for a Change” tournament is a shining example of how young athletes can use their platform to uplift others and inspire change.
“We sincerely appreciate PACE Academy Athletics and all of our supporters whose generosity helps pave the way for our youth,” said Lakeisha Walker, Chief of Programs – Youth Division. “Your support makes a real difference.”
